Virtual Reality

The hexagonal 3D Life logo set against a vaporwave background of a polygonal landscape and pyramid

The classic cellular automata game in virtual reality, will be available in 2023 for SteamVR-compatible hardware.

Cells are created or destroyed based a set of simple, mathematical rules:

  • cells live if they have four (4) or five (5) live neighbors;
  • empty cells come to life if they have exactly five (5) neighbors.

This is rule Life 4,5/5.

If we substitute 2 and 3, respectively, in the above we get the common rule for 2-D life: Life 2,3/3.

Multicolored cubes float and oscillate in space
Two oscillators and static features from an early prototype for 3D Life.

Square cells have only 8 possible neighbors, while cubic cells have 26. The algorithm is the same, but good optimization is essential.

The game was created using the Unity engine.
